Social Media. Pros and Cons.

Author: Diana Valkanova, Krum Uzunov

Social networks, an important and integral part of our daily lives. We spend a lot of our time there. In these apps is our whole social life. There we publish photos, upload stories, share with whom and where we have been, even announce when we are in a relationship, but let's take a look at these seemingly small windows in our phones, which are a huge and unbound arable place.

In a project by people who use Facebook, published in the magazine "Social Influence", participants were divided into two groups: the first who are active and the second so-called "observers", yet people who don’t upload or comment, but just watch what happens. The project shows that after 48 hours, such "silence" leads to low self-esteem and loneliness. A Carnegie Mellon University study found that people who uploaded photos, commented on or participated in discussions of various issues under the posts of various publications, have a minimal manifestation of low self-esteem and loneliness.

Social networks can help you a lot by informing you about a certain natural phenomenon that may endanger your area, about a person who has done something good or evil, about an event such as concerts, bazaars, etc. This statement is confirmed by a study at the Medical University of Vienna showed that people understood about numerous tornadoes that passed through the southwestern United States.

Today we have countless social networks that help us connect with relatives, friends or familiar ones living thousands of miles away. Thanks to these networks, we can easily communicate with anyone anytime, anywhere, as long as we have access to Wi-Fi.

Anyone who wants to popularize their business can do so on social media. Every day we see how our Instagram stories advertises boutiques, various businesses, restaurants, equipment stores and everything one can think of. This is one of the best and most effective ways to gain publicity today.

Everything you've read so far have been the pros, but let's move on to the cons. Social networks have a negative impact on speech and spelling. Light vocabulary, verbal and grammatical errors - all this is the result of communication in "Facebook", "Instagram", "WhatsApp" and others. Everyone tries to shorten a word or phrase, to miss a comma. There's really nothing wrong with just staying up to chat. Unfortunately, all this is transferred to our written speech and we begin to make inadmissible mistakes.

When you spend more time in these networks, they lead to addiction, which is expressed in the need for frequent checks of the profile, who followed you, the likes of the new photo you uploaded. When a person wants 1000 followers and reaches them, he immediately winds up to make 2000 and this becomes a mania for promotion. According to statistics, this happens often among adolescents and is a mental disorder.

Prohibited ideas, pornographic photos, propaganda of violence and others are spread on all social networks. Despite the observation and blocking of such pages, they are re-created and in any way to hide their focus. The problem we all know about is pedophiles and how hundreds of children are sexually abused and harassed daily, which is horrifying.

Social networks are really great, but also scary. They acquire all kinds of personal and public information about us. They really help us a lot in our lifestyle for many things, but they also harm us. Everyone needs to know how to use these networks before entering them. We need to decide who to respond to, who to accept in our profile, who to watch our work and in general who to have access and viewing to our information. Be careful while on social media and always keep rationality and safety in mind.
